STEMSEAS

STEMSEAS aims to provide ship-based, 6-10 day exploratory experiences for undergraduates from diverse backgrounds aboard NSF-funded research vessels. Students will sail with experienced faculty and graduate student near-peer mentors, and engage in geoscience and oceanography activities (while also having fun)!

NSF MARINE SCIENCE REU PROGRAM AT UNCW

Research programs in UNCW’s Center for Marine Science take a multidisciplinary approach to questions in basic and applied science coastal and marine science. Our talented faculty enlist both undergraduate and graduate students in the discovery process which spans local, state national and international projects.

REU SITE IN COMPUTATIONAL STATISTICS AT UNCG

UNCG offered an NSF-funded, 10-week REU program over summer of 2023 for ten nationally recruited undergraduate students from mathematical sciences. The focus of the 2023 program was on Complex Data Analysis using Statistical and Machine Learning Tools.

Appalachian Multipurpose Apiary Informatics Systems

AppMAIS is an interdisciplinary project that aims to investigate the health, development and genomic diversity of honeybee hives in North Carolina to better understand and optimally prevent the honeybee colony collapse disorder (CCD).

Class sizes are small, and it is easy to transfer credits.

4-week courses include the evolution of animal behavior, field ecology, and seminars in ecology.

2-week courses include alpine ecology, aquatic microbial ecology, conservation ecology, forest and fire ecology, and many more!

Highlands biological station

The Highlands Biological Station (HBS) is a multi-campus center of Western Carolina University consisting of academic research, teaching, and residential facilities, as well as a natural history museum and a 12-acre native plant botanical garden. The mission is to foster research and education focused on the rich heritage of the Highlands Plateau while preserving and celebrating the integrity of the “biological crown of the southern Appalachian Mountains.”

There are one and two-week courses available.

Bridge Programs invite promising senior undergraduates or bachelor’s degree recipients in the physical sciences (astronomy, chemical engineering, chemistry, geoscience, physics, or closely related fields) to participate in one-to-two-year transitional or traditional graduate programs. Some transition programs are post-baccalaureate programs that provide research experience, advanced coursework, mentoring, and coaching to prepare a graduate school application, while others are traditional graduate programs.
